Insights from the World Happiness Report 2024

For the seventh consecutive year, Finland is the world's happiest country. But what exactly is the World Happiness Report, and how are these rankings determined?

What is the World Happiness Report?

At its core, the report measures happiness by assessing individuals' self-assessed life evaluations. Using the Cantril ladder question as a guiding tool, respondents are asked to rate their current lives on a scale from zero to ten, with ten representing the best possible life for them. This simple yet profound question allows for a glimpse into people's subjective well-being across the globe.

Behind the scenes, the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford meticulously compiles and analyzes data from over 130 countries. Alongside the Cantril ladder question, the report considers six key variables:

1. GDP per capita

2. Social support

3. Healthy life expectancy

4. Freedom

5. Generosity

6. Absence of corruption

These factors paint a comprehensive picture of a nation's overall well-being beyond mere economic prosperity. It's not just about wealth but also about social connections, health, freedom, and trust in institutions.

Top 10 Happiest Countries

As we examine the top ten happiest countries, it becomes evident that happiness is not solely determined by material wealth. Nordic countries like Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway consistently rank high, showcasing the significance of social support, freedom, and trust in fostering well-being.

Surprisingly, Israel emerges as a beacon of happiness in the Middle East, highlighting the importance of community and resilience in the face of adversity. Meanwhile, countries like Australia and Switzerland prove that a high GDP per capita is not the sole indicator of happiness.
